Matt and Cecily
Philosophy: Built upon their diverse equestrian background, training, and experience, Matt and Cecily have adopted a multi-faceted philosophy of riding and working with horses. Their main objective is to create horses and riders who are confident and skilled partners. They believe that this is achieved, at it's most basic level, through a proper understanding of the horse: how they think, move, and feel, as well as through a proper understanding of one's self as a rider: how we react, balance, and move with the horse. Matt and Cecily insist on clear communication with the horse through the thoughtful and correct
Matt and Cecily insist on clear communication with the horse through the thoughtful and correct application and well-timed release of the aids. In their training, the importance of having both trust and respect as the foundation of one's relationship with their horse is continuously emphasized. With such a foundation the horse and rider are free to develop through the Training Scale as partners. No matter what one may be working on with their horse, Matt and Cecily believe that the first step that one takes is to help the horse understand the task at hand. Once the horse has a clear understanding of it's task, then it is the rider or handler's job to encourage acceptance within the horse. With a horse that both clearly understands and willingly accepts it's task, we are then able to create brilliance and expression within the horse. As a result both the horse and the rider develop a special confidence and pride in their work and their partnership. In their teaching, they encourage each rider to constantly strive to possess the virtues of compassion, sensitivity, and precision in their riding and handling of their horse. With a clear, fair, and reassuring rider, each horse is more likely to become more relaxed, confident, and successful in their job.

Matt and Cecily's instruction is clear and easy to understand. They help riders develop a better understanding of themselves and their horses, which allows them to excel at home and in the show ring. In addition to approaching the training of each horse and rider in a thoughtful, personalized, and methodical manner, Matt and Cecily believe that it is equally as important to promote the physical well-being of the horse, as most training problems that don't stem from having a confused horse or rider can usually be traced back to a physical issue. They do this by utilizing the expertise of a team of well-rounded equine professionals including trusted vets, farriers, physical therapists, and chiropractors.

Together, Matt and Cecily have created a refreshing philosophy and approach that takes the whole horse into account. Their partnership has fostered a safe place for their horses and students to build their confidence and meet their goals. No matter what discipline or level of riding, Matt and Cecily's training is an invaluable tool.

MATT
Horses have been the driving force in Matt Brown's life for over twenty years. He began riding at the age of six under the tutelage of BHS Instructor Andrea Pfeiffer of Chocolate Horse Farm in Petaluma, CA. As a young rider he competed at numerous one star competitions and Intermediate level horse trails, culminating in his selection as a member of the Area VI team at the North American Young Riders Championships two star competition in 1993 where the team took the bronze medal. Matt went on to compete through the advanced level with his young rider mount Maximum Speed. Thanks to Andrea Matt found Max, a six-year- old appaloosa/tb cross. Though Max lacked the refinement and sophistication of fancier mounts, he more than made up for it with his unflappable character and his endless supply of heart. He earned a place with Matt for life.In 1996, Matt traveled east to Vermont where he trained with and assisted Denny Emerson.

CECILY
Cecily Clark, Assistant Trainer and Barn Manager started riding at the age of six and since then has dedicated all of her time to broadening her riding and horsemanship skills. She began competing under the guidance of Sue Riggs, Diana Field, and later Audrey Goldsmith. Countless hours spent in two-point and riding without stirrups helped her to achieve successes in the Childrens and Junior Hunter and Equitation divisions in California and Oregon, including a fourth place finish with her horse Alley Cat in the Onondarka finals as a twelve-year-old, and championships in the Junior Hunter divisions at the Michelob Classic in 1996.
Cecily credits Cat with being her greatest teacher. He was not one to gloss over all of her mistakes, which made for their fair share of disappointments in the show ring. But, when ridden correctly, Cat rewarded Cecily with brilliance, victories, and invaluable lessons learned. During college, Cecily spent time

"Although I am learning new techniques every day, the greatest and most rewarding aspect of Matt's training has been his clear explanation at every step of the what's and why's of our training so that I can grasp things conceptually and then FEEL what's happening in my horse's body and in his responsiveness. I acquired a young horse that needed to be backed and a friend suggested that I go see Matt Brown. That was the best advice I could have gotten. Matt has his own unique method unlike anything I have ever seen and I have been around horses for some forty years. Matt's goal is to give horses chance to be a partner. He is fair in discipline, consistent in communicating with the horse, and never teaches through intimidation. Matt trains every horse by their own mental and physical abilities and always makes sure they "get it " before moving on. Everything Matt does makes sense and the horses respond accordingly. — Leslie N
"You guys are horse trainer geniuses. It has literally saved my life and changed my entire relationship with the horse all for the better. It's a whole new ball game. I know it took a while to crack the formula for success, but it shows that it can be done over time and trials. I was not capable due to a cycle we were in. I am relaxed and very very happy. I didn't expect it to work out so well. THANK YOU!!!" — Mary C
"I just want to say that when Selena and I were out at the stables this last Wednesday afternoon and I watched you and Matt ride and interact with the horses, it was such a peaceful experience. It's funny, if I walked away feeling nurtured I can only imagine what the horses feel after a session with one of you. The support, respectful communication, gentleness, calmness, and focus I saw demonstrated by you both left us feeling even more grateful to have you in our lives."
