With Matt's diverse equestrian background, training and
experience, as well as his level of expertise in the martial
arts, he has developed his own philosophy of riding and
and working with horses.
His main objective is to "create horses and riders who are
willing and balanced partners". He believes that this should
be achieved through a proper understanding of the horse,
how it thinks, moves and feels, as well as through a proper
understanding of one's self as a rider, how we react, balance,
and move with the horse.
Matt insists on clear communication through the correct application and release of pressure.
In his training, Matt constantly emphasizes the importance of trust and respect as the foundation of our
relationship with horses. With such a foundation, the horse and rider are free to develop as partners. He
also emphasizes the correct balancing of the horse from the ground and basic dressage work to build the
horse's strength and improve their ability to perform. For riders, he emphasizes the connection of leg to
rein and the softness of the hands. Even at the advanced levels of jumping and dressage, Matt often
returns to basic work to solve tension and balance problems. No matter what discipline of level of riding,
his instruction is a valuable tool.
Matt utilizes the expertise of chiropractors and physical therapists for the horses. Working together with
these other professionals allows Matt to tap into each horse's full potential.
Matt's instruction is clear and easy to understand. He helps riders to develop a better under-
standing of their horse, which allows them to excel at home and in the show ring.
In his riding, Matt embodies patience and sensitivity. Through his confidence and reassurance the horse
becomes relaxed and confident in their job.
